The Options you have for shipping cars overseas by ocean

K International Transport is an experienced Freight Forwarder and NVOCC (Non Vessel Operating Common Carrier), so if you are looking for an international shipping company for cars that is able to guide you through shipping cars internationally then you have found it. There are two ways to ship your vehicle abroad by ocean transport:

  1. Containerized Shipping
  2. Roll On / Roll Off Shipping
In order to decide between these two methods of shipping vehicles overseas, you should take the following into consideration:
  • How many cars am I shipping?
    • If you are shipping multiple cars we may be able to fit 2 or more of them into a 40'HC shipping container, which may translate into savings on your international shipping price.
  • Where do I want to send my cargo?
    • Roll On / Roll Off vessels do not serve as many ports as container vessels, so if you have a specific port in mind, ask us for the service options there. The extra money it costs to ship by container may be dwarfed by the costs of getting your vehicle from the nearest Roll On / Roll Off port to your final destination.
  • How large is the vehicle I am shipping?
    • Roll On / Roll Off cargo is priced by the total cubic meters of a shipment (or, in the case that tonnage exceeds cubic meters, by the amount of short tons). If your vehicle is nearly as large as a 20' shipping container (dimensions of shipping containers), it may actually be more economical to ship it inside a container. This mostly applies to trucks (lorries) and wheeled construction equipment.
  • Do I need to send personal effects with my vehicle?
    • If you ship a car overseas on a Roll On / Roll Off vessel, every steamship line requires that no personal effects are left in the vehicle, and will reject the car if personal effects are present. So if you are moving or for some other reason have extra things to ship with the vehicle, you will have to send them separately, or put them together in a container.
Both shipping methods are secure, but a container will be sealed by the warehouse and not opened (unless given an intensive inspection by customs) until claimed at the port of discharge.

Another consideration for container shipping is the cost to unload the vehicle and return the empty container at the port of discharge, which are generally not included in our quotations, because the charges would be in the local currency and would have to be paid directly to the terminal/port.

Whichever way you choose to ship your car, motorcycle, truck or bus abroad, K International is glad to advise you and arrange the shipment for you. Please visit our rate request page, email us (inquiries@kinternational.com) or give us a call at (212) 267-6400.

How to prepare a car for international shipment on a Roll On / Roll Off Vessel

The international shipping process always goes more smoothly when our customers have all the information they need in order to prepare their vehicles and documents before deadlines come too close for comfort. Please take a look at the following list that gives a few pointers to keep in mind when you want to ship a car overseas:

- All vehicles should be delivered with no more than ¼ tank of gas.

- Please make sure the vehicle is clean, free of dirt, and does not have any leaks. The steamship line has the right to refuse cargo not up to its standards of safety.

- If you are shipping your vehicle abroad via roll-on / roll-off overseas car transport service, you must ensure that there are no personal effects left inside the vehicle.

- Having the right insurance coverage is for your benefit in the event of loss or damage to your vehicle while in transit. K International is happy to add either "Total Loss / F.P.A" or "All-Risk" Marine insurance to your quotation.

- Weigh your shipping options carefully. For example, if you plan to ship personal effects to the destination as well, it is likely more economical to ship them together with the vehicle inside a container than shipping them separately.

- Please prepare all required documents required clear your vehicle with United States Export Customs. Documents we will need include the vehicle's original title, notarized bill of sale, and, if your vehicle has a lien on it, a letter from the lien holder on their official stationery authorizing export.

Head on over to our international car shipping rate request page and start the international shipping process today! The K International representative that give you your quotation will be assigned to your shipment from start to finish, so you don't have to worry about getting passed from one department to another for the answer to a simple question.

What are the dimensions of a 45' Shipping Container?

If you are shipping cargo that has a length that exceeds the 40' length of a container, one of the options for international container shipping are 45' containers.

The 45' Container one the bottom is 5' longer than the 40' containers above it.

45' Containers have a much lower availability when compared to other container types, and not all terminals have them. Containerized transport is the world standard for international ocean freight

There are a few different types of containers. The important dimensions for 45' containers are as follows:
45' High Cube
Inside Length44' 6''13.55 m
Inside Width7' 6''2.33 m
Inside Height8' 10''2.38 m
Door Width7' 6''2.33 m
Door Height8' 4''2.28 m
Capacity3, 037 cubic feet67.67 cubic meters
Tare Weight10, 449 lbs3, 701 kgs
Maximum Cargo61, 200* lbs26, 630* kgs

*Legal weight and weight maximum for steamship line may be lower than this number

There are a few other types of containers (e.g. refrigerated, Flat Rack, Open Top), but the above covers the dimensions of 45' containers.

The size and weight of your cargo is important in the quotation process, and will change the best container to use. Be wary when a freight forwarder does not ask about weight and dimensions before giving you what appears to be a great quote. Once they have control of your cargo, they will continue adding fees as the shipment continues, since they did not advise you correctly from the start. K International Transport gives you an accurate quote so you can budget accurately.

Looks Can Be Deceiving...How International Companies Save Money Purchasing and Shipping Refurbished Machinery

The old English adage says, "Don't judge a book by its cover," or in other words, looks can be deceiving.  In international shipping we experience this on a daily basis - what looks like an old rusted excavator or a worthless, dusty wire drawing machinery can actually be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Every year, buyers all over the world search the USA for used factory machinery and equipment.

Refurbished may sound like a dirty word, but to foreign buyers the cost-saving advantage of refurbished machinery and equipment is well worth the risk.  For example, a customer in Korea is looking for some equipment to build a steel mill factory.  A factory in Ohio has just finished renovating their new facility and no longer have use for their old equipment.  The old equipment is still in good condition and has at least another 10-15 years of productivity left if it is refurbished.  Furthermore, the equipment is normally from a top manufacturer and is of excellent quality.  The customer in Korea realizes they can buy the equipment from the Ohio factory and ship it to Korea for a fraction of the cost of buying new equipment - they could even save millions of dollars!  So what is the Ohio factory and the Korean customer to do?....make a deal!  The factory gets rid of the old machinery and the Korean customer can save money building their factory with the refurbished machinery.  Everyone benefits.

When it comes to shipping used factory machinery, equipment and parts, we are the experts.  We can provide open top containers and flat racks for special projects.

When it comes to shipping refurbished machinery and equipment overseas you want to make sure you use a international shipping company with experience shipping used refurbished machinery.  Oftentimes when a factory is dismantled or a customer buys used drawing machinery or a used block making machinery, they need a company that can handle large static equipment.  When shipping used machinery you need an international shipping company that can:
  • Provide equipment dismantling
  • Pick-up cargo from the supplier
  • Provide a detailed loading plan for multiple pieces when shipping a used factory and several pieces of equipment overseas
  • Provide standard and open-top containers, flat racks, breakbulk and ro/ro shipping services for used machinery and equipment
  • Handle all required documentation for export

We recently shipped this used hydraulic shear machine to Chile!  The piece was moved from the Mid-West and put on a skid for export shipping via breakbulk service.

This unit is now ready to head to the terminal for delivery!  Every year we have several customers who purchase used machinery in the United States to be refurbished and used in another country.

If you are looking for any of the above shipping services you can contact us today!  We provide professional and reliable international shipping services for refurbished machinery including equipment dismantling, factory moves, and large breakbulk shipments from the United States.  For more information or to receive international shipping quotes contact us today at 212-267-6400 or on Skype at kinternationalny.  We can also be reached by email at inquiries@kinternational.com
