When Should I Use A Carnet in International Shipping? How to Ship Under an ATA Carnet

Your passport is the single most important document you will need in order to travel the world.  Did you know passports aren't only for humans?  Each year thousands of items move around the world under an ATA Carnet.  As the leading provider of reliable international shipping services from the United States, we can help our customers decide whether a carnet is the best option for moving their goods around the world.

The ATA Carnet (Admission Temporaire / Temporary Admission) is an international customs document that allows goods to temporarily enter a participating country duty and tax free.  You have unlimited entry into all participating countries for a certain period of time.  Furthermore, you will not have to deal with the hassle and costs of obtaining a custom bond or export licenses for your goods.  Carnets are most popularly used under the following scenarios:
  • Goods are being shown on display at a foreign trade show
  • A company will need to bring certain tools to complete a job or make a repair in a foreign country
  • Race car drivers bringing their car to a racing event
  • Musical instruments for performers.  For example Stradivarius violins and other priceless instruments
  • Yachts and sail boats for international race competitions
  • Props, sets and other materials used for a film or entertainment event
The ATA Carnet serves as a passport for your goods!  Speed through customs in 75 countries and territories with an ATA Carnet today!

A reliable and experienced overseas shipping company should be able to provide you with a carnet and guide you through the set-up process. In order to to ship your goods overseas under a carnet, you should first consider the following key facts:
  • The ATA Carnet is not accepted everywhere.  It is currently accepted in 75 countries and territories around the world.  For a list of countries that currently allow carnets visit: http://www.atacarnet.com/carnet-countries
  • A carnet cannot be used for consumable or disposable items or for any type of product or goods that are being sold abroad
  • While the carnet allows for goods to enter duty and tax free, the cost of the carnet is calculated on the value of your goods. Check the duty rates for your cargo in the countries it is entering.  You might be surprised to discover your particular good is duty free or has a very low duty rate.  In this case, it might be cheaper to import your good under normal circumstances vs paying for a carnet
If you are unsure whether a carnet is the best option for your international shipping needs, contact us today at 212-267-6400, on skype at kinternationalny or send an email to sales@kinternational.com

Looks Can Be Deceiving...How International Companies Save Money Purchasing and Shipping Refurbished Machinery

The old English adage says, "Don't judge a book by its cover," or in other words, looks can be deceiving.  In international shipping we experience this on a daily basis - what looks like an old rusted excavator or a worthless, dusty wire drawing machinery can actually be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Every year, buyers all over the world search the USA for used factory machinery and equipment.

Refurbished may sound like a dirty word, but to foreign buyers the cost-saving advantage of refurbished machinery and equipment is well worth the risk.  For example, a customer in Korea is looking for some equipment to build a steel mill factory.  A factory in Ohio has just finished renovating their new facility and no longer have use for their old equipment.  The old equipment is still in good condition and has at least another 10-15 years of productivity left if it is refurbished.  Furthermore, the equipment is normally from a top manufacturer and is of excellent quality.  The customer in Korea realizes they can buy the equipment from the Ohio factory and ship it to Korea for a fraction of the cost of buying new equipment - they could even save millions of dollars!  So what is the Ohio factory and the Korean customer to do?....make a deal!  The factory gets rid of the old machinery and the Korean customer can save money building their factory with the refurbished machinery.  Everyone benefits.

When it comes to shipping used factory machinery, equipment and parts, we are the experts.  We can provide open top containers and flat racks for special projects.

When it comes to shipping refurbished machinery and equipment overseas you want to make sure you use a international shipping company with experience shipping used refurbished machinery.  Oftentimes when a factory is dismantled or a customer buys used drawing machinery or a used block making machinery, they need a company that can handle large static equipment.  When shipping used machinery you need an international shipping company that can:
  • Provide equipment dismantling
  • Pick-up cargo from the supplier
  • Provide a detailed loading plan for multiple pieces when shipping a used factory and several pieces of equipment overseas
  • Provide standard and open-top containers, flat racks, breakbulk and ro/ro shipping services for used machinery and equipment
  • Handle all required documentation for export

We recently shipped this used hydraulic shear machine to Chile!  The piece was moved from the Mid-West and put on a skid for export shipping via breakbulk service.

This unit is now ready to head to the terminal for delivery!  Every year we have several customers who purchase used machinery in the United States to be refurbished and used in another country.

If you are looking for any of the above shipping services you can contact us today!  We provide professional and reliable international shipping services for refurbished machinery including equipment dismantling, factory moves, and large breakbulk shipments from the United States.  For more information or to receive international shipping quotes contact us today at 212-267-6400 or on Skype at kinternationalny.  We can also be reached by email at inquiries@kinternational.com

Need Help Shipping Agricultural and Farm Machinery Overseas? Read on to Learn More About our International Agricultural Equipment Shipping Services

Are you looking to ship agricultural equipment and farm machinery overseas from the United States?  Shipping sprayers, loaders, seeders, planters, tractors, combines, flex header, tillage equipment, harvest equipment, corn hearders and other farm equipment internationally from the USA can be done in three simple steps.  Continue to read below to see our how international shipping services for farm and agricultural machinery from the USA can be as simple as 1-2-3:

Step #1: Receive an International Shipping Quote

In order to ship your farming and agricultural equipment and machinery overseas you will first need to receive a quote.  Besides telling the overseas shipping company what country you are trying to ship to, you will need to also provide other information.  Before you send in your request for a rate, make sure you have the following information available: length, width, height and weight of the unit.  If you are looking to ship a sprayer overseas, this unit is self-propelled.  If you are shipping a different type of farm machinery that is not self-propelled you will need to indicate if it 1). has wheels and can be towed or 2). if it is static and needs to be lifted.  Finally, if you need the unit picked up you should provide the city, state and zip code where the equipment is located.

Step #2: Prepare your Agricultural Equipment and Farm Machinery for International Shipment

Before shipping your machinery overseas you should make sure it is ready to handle being shipped overseas.  Self-propelled equipment should be in working order with proper tires, engine properly running and no leaks from the engine.  All equipment whether it is self-propelled, towable or static should be clean and free of all dirt and grease.  Any unit that is not in good condition i.e. it is dirty, leaking, or not properly running can be rejected from the port terminal.  If the international shipping company is picking up the equipment, you will need to make sure the loading facility has the proper equipment necessary to load the machinery onto the back of the truck's trailer.  Check with the loading facility if they have the necessary forklift or crane to properly load the equipment on the back of the truck.

Step #3: Ship your Agricultural and Farm Equipment Overseas

You know how much it cost to ship your unit, and you've prepared your unit and sent it on its way to the port.  Now comes the time when you finally ship your machinery overseas.  Towable and self-propelled farm machinery is shipped via roll-on / roll-off service while static agricultural equipment is either shipped inside a container, on a flatrack or through breakbulk service.  You will need to make sure you provide your freight forwarder with the proper documentation for the cargo including a commercial invoice with the value, packing list and information for the receiver in the foreign country.  Once your agricultural equipment is shipped on the vessel, the overseas shipping company should provide you with a steamship line bill of lading confirming your cargo was shipped.

How to Ship a Jet Ski Overseas

Are you looking to ship a jet ski overseas from the United States?  Unsure of which shipping method is best for shipping a jet ski?  Shipping a jet ski internationally is fairly simple.  When approaching international shipping companies for rates to ship a jet skis you should be mindful of the different shipping options you have.  Below we outline a few simple ways to ship jet skis and personal watercraft overseas from the US.

Ship a Jet Ski on a Trailer

You probably already have a trailer for your jet ski when you want to move it from one place to another in the US.  Shipping a jet ski on a trailer is the simplest way to ship your personal watercraft overseas.  Jet skis on trailers can be shipped on roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) vessels the same way you would ship a car or a large boat on trailer.  If you decide to ship your jet ski on a trailer you should make sure the trailer is in good enough condition to be towed.  Be sure to check the wheels and the tow bar for any signs of wear or damage before you ship your jet skis

The easiest way to ship a jet skis overseas is on a trailer

Ship Several Jet Skis in a Container

If you need to ship more than one jet ski you should consider shipping them overseas inside a container.  Depending on how large the jet ski is, you can load anywhere from 2 to more than 6 jet skis in a single container.   A professional warehouse can safely secure your jet skis in the container.  To fit more jet skis in one container the warehouse can have the jet skis removed from their trailers in order to decrease the length and the width.  You want to make sure that whoever loads your jet skis in a container is securing them in such a way that they do not shift during transport, and do not rub against each other causing scratches and cosmetic damage.

Ship a Crated Jet Skis

Customers who are shipping brand new jet skis oftentimes opt to have them shipped overseas in a crate.  Shipping your jet ski overseas in a crate is the best way to protect your jet skis from any possible damage.  Your international shipping company should be able to professionally crate your jet skis for international transport.  When shipping a jet ski in a crate, the crate has to be customized to fit the specifications of the jet ski.  A professional packing company will make sure the jet ski is safely crated so it will not move during transport.  Additionally, several overseas countries, including Australia, require any wood used in packing and crating your jet ski to comply with ISPM 15 wood packaging restrictions.  ISPM 15 requires all wood packaging used in international shipments to be chemically and heat treated to prevent the spread of insects and diseases between countries.  An overseas shipping company can ship your crated jet skis in a container, using breakbulk service where it is loaded on a mafi trailer or through container consolidation (LCL) service.

Always remember, no matter which method you choose to ship your jet skis you should always provide the overseas shipping company with the full dimensions of your jet ski including the length, width, height and weight.  Whether you are looking to ship a Jet Ski, Wave Runner, Sea Doo, water scooter or any type of personal watercraft overseas from the United States we can help.  We have shipped jet ski's and personal watercraft from the United States to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Australia.  To receive an international shipping quote to ship your jet ski, contact us at 212-267-6400, on Skype at kinternationalny or send us an email at: inquiries@kinternational.com.  We will respond to all requests for jet ski overseas transport rates within 1-2 business days.

Why International Shipping Insurance is Necessary

Accidents are a part of life, but when an accident occurs are you prepared?  Parents know to always bring extra diapers and drivers on the road make sure they're protected with car insurance.  The same is true for international shipping, you should always try to be as prepared as possible when the inexplicable happens. While K International Transport always strives to provide the best international shipping services possible, there are certain things beyond our control.  But, just like those extra diapers, there are ways to make the accidents of life more tolerable.  We hate to scare you, but in international shipping several things can happen, a vessel could sink, a car carrier could get into an accident, a container could fall off a ship. For example, in October of 2011 the container ship MV Rena ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef in New Zealand.  The ship had over 1,300 containers aboard.  Although not common, we always recommend our customers purchase some form of international shipping and cargo insurance.

The MV Rena ran aground near the coast of New Zealand in late 2011.  Don't let international shipping accidents catch you off-guard.  Read on to learn more about the benefits of cargo insurance.

What does international shipping insurance cover?  It all depends on what type of insurance you decide to choose.  Here are the two types of insurance available for customers shipping their cargo overseas in container, ro/ro or by air:

  • Total Loss (FPA- Free of Particular Average)
  • All Risk
Total loss (FPA) insurance covers partial or total losses due to certain catastrophic perils, for example the sinking of a vessel such as what occurred to the MV Rena.

Don't get taken out to sea if your container is lost during international shipping.  We recommend our customers at the very least purchase "Total Loss (FPA)" cargo insurance.

All risk insurance covers against the risk of physical loss or damage from any external cause.  All risk has all the same coverage as total loss but also includes coverage for damage.

Always check with your international shipping company the terms and conditions of the international cargo insurance policy.  When shipping to certain destinations you should also ask if your cargo insurance policy covers against the risk of wars, strikes, riots or civil commotions.

When shipping internationally it is better to be safe than sorry.  As one of the top international shipping companies in the United States, K International always recommends that our customers at least consider Total Loss (FPA) Insurance.  In the game of life, anything is possible, and you should try to be prepared!  For more information on our international shipping insurance or to receive international shipping quotes contact us at: inquiries@kinternational.com.  We can also be reached by phone at 212-267-6400 or Skype: kinternationalny.  Don't forget to also ask us to quote for international shipping cargo insurance! Stranger Things Have Been Done...How to Ship Unusual Stuff Overseas

**The below story is based on true events**

At K International we have shipped everything from cars to milk powder, so virtually anything is possible and we do everything we can to help our customers ship their items overseas.  To help you understand that just about anything can be shipped internationally we will share the story of our customer "Tom" who decided to move to Indonesia.   At first glance, this seems like nothing out of the ordinary, but what Tom wanted to ship was far from ordinary.  Tom ran a successful shop in NYC and he wanted to bring it along with him, still think this is ordinary right?  But what Tom wanted to ship was...his butcher shop...here is Tom's story:

Tom was a local neighborhood butcher in NYC.  Well-known and loved in his neighborhood, his shop did very well.  But Tom tired of the NYC life and was ready to move on to his next adventure.
Tom was a very successful butcher in NYC.
But he was tired of the busy city life.

Tom decided to trade the busy streets of NYC for the easy beach life of Indonesia.  Although Tom wanted a quiet life, he didn't want to leave behind his beloved butcher shop.  He called K International Transport to ask about shipping his car and furniture and other household items to Indonesia.  This was no problem and K International told Tom how they could help him load his car and household items including furniture, books and other person items inside a container. Tom was pleased with K International's superb international shipping services for his car and furniture.

But Tom couldn't think of what to do with his beloved shop.  He didn't want to sell it but he wasn't sure if he could bring it along.  He decided to ask K International and see if they had any ideas.  K International let Tom know "I don't see why not!", "Since your shop is located in a busy part of Manhattan we can bring a container to your shop late at night to avoid causing any traffic jams and you can load all your shop equipment in the container!"  Tom jumped for joy!  He wouldn't have to leave behind his beloved shop.
Tom jumped for joy when K International told him they could help ship his butcher shop

A few weeks later Tom packed the last meat slicer in it's shipping crate in preparation for container loading.  That night while the city was quiet, Tom's container was brought to his butcher shop and Tom and his friends loaded his butcher shop inside.  Tom packed all his equipment inside his container with no problem.  After he finished loading the truck driver closed the container door and placed a seal on the door.  Tom's container was ready for delivery to port and international shipping to Indonesia.

A few weeks later Tom's butcher shop, car and furniture all arrived safely in Indonesia.  Tom was ecstatic, he could enjoy the beaches and monkey's of Indonesia and still have his beloved meat shop.  Tom soon became the talk of the town and was yet again the favorite neighborhood butcher.  Tom called K International to let them know they were the best international shipping company, and he was happy and relaxed in Indonesia.

Because of K International's convenient international shipping services to Indonesia,
Tom was able to enjoy his butcher shop among the palm trees of beautiful Indonesia

International Shipping Services from the Midwest

Ever wonder how non-coastal states ship overseas?  Believe it or not a vast majority of international shipments from the United States start in the Midwest.  Whether you are a manufacturing company in Ohio, Kansas, Tennessee, Illinois or any other Midwestern state, international shipping services are easily available from these locations.  How are international shipping companies able to ship from the Midwest?  The answer is simple...by rail.

Several major Midwestern cities have rail yards servicing customers who need to ship their products overseas.  If you look  at the major cities in the Midwest, most have a rail yard.  Major rail cities used in international shipping include rail yards located in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Memphis, Kansas City, and Indianapolis. These rail yards make shipping from the midwest simple and fast.

In order to understand how simple international shipping is from the Midwest, we will go through the process step-by-step.

  1.  First we locate where the nearest rail station is to your warehouse or manufacturing plant
  2. Let's say you are closest to Chicago rail, we will then schedule to have our trucker pick-up an empty container from Chicago's rail yard and deliver it to your door for loading.
  3. After loading is complete the filled container is returned to Chicago's rail yard for shipment to a east coast port.  The container is loaded on the train for shipment.
  4. From Chicago the container will oftentimes travel to the port in New York or Norfolk, Virginia.
  5. Once your container arrives at the east coast port it is shipped abroad on a container vessel.
Shipping from the Midwest is possible using America's railroad system.
Containers are loaded onto the train and shipped to USA east and west coast ports.

The efficient rail system makes shipping internationally from the Midwest easy.  As a leading overseas shipping company, we offer competitive international shipping rates from the Midwest including from Chicago, Cleveland, Memphis, Indianapolis, Detroit, Kansas City and more.  Email us to receive a international shipping quote and to learn about the expert international shipping services we offer from the Midwest USA to all available ports worldwide.  To receive a quote email us at: inquiries@kinternational.com.  If you have any questions you can also call us at 212-267-6400 or on Skype: kinternationalny.

How We Can Help You Become Successful in International Shipping Commerce Part II- Understanding Letters of Credit

Last month's article in the series "How We Can Help You Become Successful in International Shipping Commerce" focused on the importance of understanding INCOTERMS in international shipping. This week we continue with the series and focus on another shipping issue that international shipping companies can help you with – letters of credit.
.
So what is a letter of credit exactly? A letter of credit is a commonly used form of payment in international commerce. The letter of credit is issued by a buyer's bank and guarantees payment to the seller.

When should you use a letter of credit in international shipping? In international shipping letters of credit are recommended when the cargo being shipped has a high value and/or the seller and buyer are establishing a new business relationship. Letters of credit are oftentimes used for customers engaged in heavy equipment shipping, commercial goods shipping, and project cargo.

What else should I know about letters of credit? The letter of credit specifies the terms and conditions that must be met before payment is made to the seller. The issuing bank (buyer's bank) will send the letter of credit document to the seller's bank (called the beneficiary bank) for review and approval. Under the most commonly used letter of credit, an irrevocable letter of credit, the issuing bank irrevocably agrees that payment will be made. The letter of credit usually stipulates the documents the seller must present to the bank. Upon approval of the required documents and all other conditions of the letter of credit are met, the issuing bank transfers payment to the seller's bank.

One of the biggest hurdles for letters of credit is discrepancies. Discrepancies could count as errors in the bank presentation and this normally results in bank payment delays for the seller or in some cases non payment! Does your business struggle with letter of credit compliance issues? Do you have difficulties understanding the terms and conditions spelled out in the letter of credit? If you answered yes to one or both of the above questions then worry no more, K International is here to help you with your various international shipping needs!

When shipping with letter of credit you want to make sure you use a prestigious and reliable freight forwarder capable of handling the international shipping services required under a letter of credit. Still considering different overseas shipping companies to handle your letter of credit shipments? Look no further than K International, we have years of experience working with letters of credit in international shipping and can provide reliable references. Whether it is construction equipment shipping, container shipping, airfreight, commercial goods, or project cargo under letter of credit, we can help!

Shipping Construction Equipment in Container

Most heavy equipment shipping services utilize roll-on roll-off service for excavators, back hoes, wheel loaders, front loaders, dump trucks, cranes, motor graders, bull dozers and trailer shipping from the USA to several international destinations. However, sometimes the roll-on roll-off shipping costs are very high or a particular destination does not have roll-on roll-off service – so how do you ship your Caterpillar excavator overseas? If your heavy construction equipment is small enough we can dismantle and ship your machine in a container!
Shipping dismantled heavy machinery is possible for several types of construction equipment. Construction equipment shipping in container is available for those units that can be easily taken apart and put back together again. However, not all overseas shipping companies have the experience in container dismantling – and this is where K International can help!
K International Transport Co., Inc. has shipped numerous containers of dismantled machinery from the USA to various destinations around the world. Equipment shipping in ocean containers is also available for construction equipment units that are too large to fit in a container but have attachments such as a blade, cab or bucket that can be loaded inside a container to ship overseas. Even if you have one oversized piece we can load the rest of your construction equipment in container and ship the oversized piece via flat rack.
We can load your heavy cargo in ocean containers at several locations throughout the United States. Are you are able to dismantle your high heavy construction equipment and load the container yourself? We can drop the container at your door and pick-up when you are finished with loading. If you are able to load your container within two (2) hours we can offer live load service at a slightly cheaper cost than dropping and picking up the container loaded with heavy machinery later.
K International also has professional experience in factory dismantling and container shipping. If you have a high heavy units that are part of a large factory that will require dismantling, container loading and shipping then look no further than K International!
Heavy machinery shipping has several options and loading construction equipment capable of being dismantled and loaded into an ocean container can save you money on shipping costs and allows you to ship to destinations that do not offer roll-on roll-off service.
Transporting heavy machinery internationally requires the expertise of one of the best international shipping companies in the United States – K International Transport. We offer superior international shipping services for high heavy construction equipment dismantling and shipping. Visit our high-heavy / construction equipment shipping information page for more information and pictures on our container dismantling and heavy machinery transport services.
