What Information Will I Need to Ship My Car Overseas?

So you've received a car shipping price and want to know what is next. The next step, in order to smoothly ship a car overseas, is to begin gathering all the necessary documents and pieces of information you will need during the shipping process:

1.                  Full name, address, and contact phone number of the shipper in the United States.  The shipper is the person who receives the primary benefit from the shipment of the vehicle; in many cases this is the owner of the vehicle at the time it is shipped.

2.                  Full name, address and contact phone number of the consignee (recipient) at destination.  This must be an address in the destination country; you may use name of shipper with a c/o address at destination.

3.                  Title Number and State of issue of vehicle’s original title. Vehicle Identification Number for Shipper’s Export Declaration purposes. The Original Title is necessary for export customs clearance. Some states require further documents, like a notarized bill of sale.


4.                  Vehicles with liens on them may not be exported. If the vehicle at one point had a lien, we must present U.S. Customs with a notarized Lien Release Letter on the Lien-holder's stationery.

4.                  If shipper is an individual, copy of a picture I.D. of shipper.

5.                  If shipper is an individual you can apply for an individual EIN number. You can do this by visiting www.irs.gov/businesses/small and selecting “Employer ID Numbers (EIN).”  Social security numbers are no longer accepted for shipments by individuals. If shipper is a company, the Tax ID number of the company would be used. This is required by U.S. law for us to complete shipper’s export declaration (SED).  These numbers will be kept confidential and will only be used as required to ship your items. The Shipper's Export Declaration is only used for United States Census statistics.

International Shipping Companies - In Depth: Shipper's Export Declaration (Part 4)

There are many ways to ship a Lexus overseas (about as many for shipping an Audi internationally), but one thing all of these shipments have in common is that your vehicle won't ever leave the United States without obtaining an AES ITN (that's Automated Export System Internal Transaction Number, for the laypeople out there). If you definitely want to ship a Mercedes to Saudi Arabia, you need to file a Shipper's Export Declaration to get that AES ITN. K International Transport is able to file this on your behalf, taking the burden of export customs compliance of your shoulders.

In this final segment, I will cover the "Commodity Information" section of the Shipper's Export Declaration. There are sections I have not covered, but they are generally optional or not applicable to most shipments our customers send. 

• Commodity Information - This section is going to be comprised of various information about what it is your are shipping.
• Schedule B number
• Schedule B numbers are the classification system used by the United States government to categorize exports for census statistics. These numbers are based upon the broader Harmonized System that is an internationally standard system that also lends itself to United States Harmonized Tariff Schedule used by the U.S. for determining import duties. Identical goods should have identical Schedule B and Harmonized Schedule numbers only up to 6 digits (Schedule B numbers have 10 digits)
• If you are unsure of what number to use, K International is happy to advise the correct one
• Qty (only for some Schedule B numbers)
• For every schedule B number that requires a quantity, the quantity used is generally the one used by the industry dealing in that commodity. Common quantity types include net kilograms (56 kgs), number of units (2 Airplanes), and liters (6 liters of Vanilla Flavoring).
• Gross Weight
• Commercial Value
• Origin (F - Foreign, D - Domestic)
• This can be tricky to determine at times, especially when a product is assembled in one country, but from parts manufactured in many others.
• License code
• For some types of commodities the Bureau of Industry and Security require specific licenses to be obtained prior to export. To this end, depending on the type of goods, an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) and Export License Number may be required as well.
• Used Vehicle? Y/N
• If the answer to this is yes, then one must also enter the VIN # (or product ID where applicable), Title Number and State that issued Title

This concludes the run-down of commonly required information for the Shipper's Export Declaration. International Shipping Companies - In Depth: Shipper's Export Declaration (Part 2)

United States Export regulations can be on of the trickier parts of shipping your car overseas. For nearly all exports, the United States government requires a Shipper's Export Declaration to be filed prior to export. K International Transport can file the SED on your behalf, making international car shipping much smoother for you. In this series I will go through and explain the common pieces of information required to fill out a Shipper's Export Declaration, so the Automated Export System (AES) is less of a mystery. Please note that even if you intend to ship LCL internationally, it is likely still required to file an SED.


In this part of this series, I will cover the "USPPI Information" and "Ultimate Consignee Information" sections of the shipper's export declaration that must be filed if you want to obtain an AES Internal Transaction Number (ITN), which is required if you want to ship your car internationally.


USPPI Information

• United States Principal Party in Interest is generally the seller, owner or manufacturer. If a foreign entity is in the U.S. when they buy the goods for export, they could also be the USPPI
• Name of Company 
• Company or individual's name
• EIN Number - Employer Identification Number
• When exporting, you must apply for an EIN if you are an individual. The process is very short, and K International can guide you through it.
• If you are a non-U.S. passport holder, you may simply use that non-U.S. passport number instead of obtaining an EIN
• Contact Name
• Contact Phone
• Cargo origin
