When to Use a Container vs. a Roll-on/Roll-off Vessel for Automobile Shipping

When shipping an automobile, international shipping companies will usually notify the customer of the two options of overseas transport: container and ro/ro shipping. However, many customers don’t know the pros and cons of each option. Fortunately, the shipping company will usually make the right decision for their client, but that doesn’t mean the customers shouldn’t be aware of the differences themselves.

Roll-on/roll-off shipping is typically for running automobiles. Most people decide to use ro/ro vessels for contemporary or luxury automobiles that are able to be driven up onto the vessel. This option is a favorite because it is typically cheaper, depending on the final destination of the cargo, and is safe. Because the vehicle is driven onto the vessel rather than loaded into a container, there is a very low risk for damage to the car.

Many customers opt for container shipping when transporting their vehicle with a company’s overseas car transport services. This option is best for those with vintage or classic automobiles that are non-runners, or that have a high value. Containers ensure that the automobile is protected from the elements during the commute overseas. However, this option can be slightly more expensive than shipping a vehicle on a ro/ro vessel. With containers, customers are also able to ship other materials by placing them inside their vehicle and in the empty space in the container.

No matter which option the customer and the shipping company settle for, both are safe and efficient with the transportation of automobiles overseas. If all the requirements are fulfilled, such as leaving the tank of gas only a quarter full, the process should run smoothly.

Do Prices Vary When Shipping to Various Countries?

Many international shipping beginners aren’t aware of the many nuances involved with the process.

On the basic level, international shipping services are the same regardless of the cargo’s final destination. First, the cargo is transported to the nearest, most efficient port in the United States either by carrier service or by the customers themselves. This port can be in New York, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, California, or any other available port in the country.

The international shipping company would then arrange for the shipment overseas by taking care of the export formalities, insurance, and actually sending the container or roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel overseas. Up until this point, the price is dependent on the shipping company’s rates, the shipping line’s price for the transportation to the specific country of interest, and the size, nature, and quantity of your cargo.

The price can vary once the cargo actually arrives at the country of interest. At that point, the customs clearance laws of the final location can dictate how much more or less the customer would have to pay. Some countries have very low import tariffs, while others are high; this fact can often affect the type of cargo that is usually shipped to that specific place.

For example, the high Chinese import taxes make it hard for customers to justify shopping affordable automobiles. Instead, most international automobile shipping to China is of expensive luxury automobiles.

However, customers shouldn’t worry about the nuances of international shipping. The company will normally take care of everything with only minimal help from their client to contribute to a stress-free process.
