consignee. Fortunately, there are a few
key things to think about that can help prevent problems. Here are some ways to get it right from the
start so you can ensure your cargo ships smoothly.
Consider your consignee carefully. If you are shipping because of repeat
business or shipping to yourself, then this isn’t as big of an issue. But if your consignee is not well known to
you that could present a problem with shipping.
If they do not show up to receive the cargo and are virtually
untraceable, your cargo could be abandoned.
Getting written confirmation from your consignee about the
shipping conditions is a great way to provide yourself some insurance about the
cargo. If your consignee balks at the
idea or starts to delay, consider this a big, red flag.
Make sure all the proper documents are in order. Without proper documents, your consignee
won’t be able to take possession of the cargo anyway! This can also include the way the cargo is
shipped. Clear up right at the time of
booking whether the cargo is going as Freight Prepaid or Freight Collect so
there is no shipping disputes later that prevent possession of cargo.
Letters of credit are also important documents to get right
as well. Without the proper letters of
credit, sometimes cargo can’t be claimed, creating serious delays and possible
additional fines or fees. Banks can be
very picky about what kind of letter of credit they are willing to accept, and
documentation is critical.
If you don’t take the proper precautions, then you run the
risk of creating a situation where there is abandoned cargo. This is more than just a headache and a
stessor – it can mean a total loss.
