Shipping a Yacht to Europe? Tips You Need Now

Taking advantage of the weather in various ports of call in Europe this time of year is something many families do annually.  It is an excellent time to ship your yacht abroad and spend a carefree month or so away from it all.  Before you ship, though, here are a few important tips you need to know, particularly if you have never shipped a yacht before.

There are several methods of shipping.  Whether a roll-on/roll-off carrier or flat rack shipping, you have choices depending on the size of your yacht.  Smaller yachts could even be shipped in containers.  Customized cradles can also be built to ensure that your yacht is well protected during the journey.

Transport can include more than just the ocean voyage.  Pick up is something you will need to determine ahead of time.  If you want, pick up can be arranged from a marina or other specified destination.  But we can even pick up yachts straight from the manufacturer, auction or dealer.  Yachts are generally transported by trailer to the port of departure.

Work with a logistics company early on.  Ocean carriers have schedules to keep to, so if you are working on the purchase of a yacht you expect to be immediately shipped by a certain date, you don’t want to find yourself disappointed when your wants conflict with a previously tightly packed shipping schedule.  Avoid unexpected delays by working with a professional who can also oversee the results of your shipment at every step along the way.

Many international shipping customers are interested in shipping to land-locked countries. Ethiopia specifically is a very popular destination for both roll-on/roll-off (Ro/Ro) and container service (FCL and LCL).

But how do you get a car, construction equipment, or personal effects to a country inaccessible by vessels? With most companies’ international shipping services, the cargo can be shipped to the closest available port. In this case, it is Port Djibouti.

The procedure is similar to the usual international automobile shipping or container shipping process. The company will first identify the closest and most affordable port in the United States, depending on where the customer is located. At this stage, the shipping company will most likely determine whether the customer is able to deliver the cargo to the port or not. Inland trucking and transportation services will come in handy for the latter option.

The shipping company will then take care of the necessary paperwork and export formalities in the United States. This includes communicating with the customer about any additional port charges and documents that will make the shipment run smoothly.

Finally, the cargo will be transported via vessel to Port Djibouti, where the company can help with customs clearance and import formalities in Djibouti. Unfortunately, the customer will need to arrange a method of transportation from Djibouti to Ethiopia with local companies.

Shipping overseas is easy with a reliable international shipping company, even if the country is land-locked.

    What is Roll-on/Roll-off, Anyway?

Transporting certain kinds of cargo means a certain kind of treatment when it comes to loading and unloading the vessel.  Your charges are always based on the combination of services you select – from pickup, packing and delivery to the type of vessel and loading service.  If you are planning on moving vehicles and equipment or even personal belongings, then the most popular way to do so is with roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) methods.  But what does this mean and is it for you?

What is it?  Imagine the inside of a vessel that actually looks like a multi-decked parking garage, and you have a sense of what this kind of cargo vessel looks like.  Some may have as many as ten decks that can hold thousands of cars.  Some ships may be larger, others smaller depending on the specialty kind of cargo.

Why is it so popular?  For one thing, it is the most recommended way of transport, which also makes it the most popular way to move goods.  Ro/ro is an easy method of loading cargo onto a ship, but it is also the most economical.  Once loaded onto the shipping vessel, it is secured.  The chances of having damage done in shipping using ro/ro methods is rare.

Are you shipping a boat?  Then you definitely want to ship it ro/ro.  Boats will be much safer contained in a cargo vessel with this method, as they won’t be damaged at sea while in transport.  The boat will be driven onto a deck and then removed the same way once it gets to the proper port.

If you are looking to save money on your international shipping needs, but you also want to be sure your things are handled carefully and safely, then ro/ro is without a doubt the way to go-go!

The Ins and Outs of Importing Cargo into the United States

If interested in overseas shipping, most international shipping companies would be happy to help you along the process. However, once it comes to importing cargo into the United States from other countries, the regulations involved in the fine print are enough to scare potential customers and companies alike.

Although there are many similarities to export shipping, they end when the cargo reaches United States customs services at the destination port.

From the beginning of the shipping process, the goods being shipped need to be declared meticulously on the entry documents. This pertains mostly to full container (FCL) and less-than container (LCL) shipments.

For automobiles, it is important to know that United States customs cannot accept cars that were not made for the U.S market. In other words, if the car was not made in America, it cannot be imported into the country unless it’s an older model (age restrictions vary).

Besides these two regulations, many more exist for shipping from specific countries and ports. Luckily, a shipping company’s international shipping services will normally take care of all customs issues so that the customer does not have to worry.

For the customer, one of the most important decisions includes choosing the port of entry based on convenience. These ports include those in New York, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and California.

Other than that, the company’s specific shipping services should take care of the rest, even arranging a car carrier service if the automobile needs to be transported from the port to a warehouse or your door.

International shipping can be easy with the right international shipping company, even when importing goods into the United States!

Lessons from the Explosion in China

The recent explosion at a warehouse in Tianjin, China that killed more than 100 people seriously disrupted port activity and caused all shippers to redouble their efforts to provide safety lessons and key insights into the terrible accident.  Here are a few important lessons to come from this tragedy.

Safety is paramount.  While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it is believed that the explosions occurred when a shipment full of explosives detonated.  Packing your containers and labeling them in an appropriate way is critical to the success of every shipment.  Don’t skip on the labeling process because you don’t want to identify the contents.  You may be putting people at risk without realizing it.

You don’t have to be packing explosives to create a problem.  A car, for example, offers plenty of hazardous materials while it is being shipped.  Its air bags, air conditioning equipment and batteries create an acidic or gas environment that could become explosive.  The same is true for drilling and mining equipment.  Even office supplies can be potentially hazardous if they contain aerosols or electrical storage batteries.  What doesn’t seem hazardous to us in our everyday lives may have a different role to consider when shipped.

To gives some context for how terrible the blast was, a logistics company storing some several thousand cars was incinerated by the fireball produced by the blast.  The blast also shattered windows and doors and rocked whole buildings in a residential area nearby.

All in all, over 800 people were either injured or killed in the blast.  It is worth being careful.  You can help by making sure you follow all safety directions and label  and declare your goods properly.  If the logistics company gives you a recommendation, please follow it.  It is in everyone’s best interests.

    Chaos on the Sea?

While Christmas may seem like a long time away, now is the time where shipping cargo gets a little hectic in preparation for the holiday season.  And, just as in years past, the import percentages are set to increase.  Even though you may still be buying school supplies, the docks are unloading toys and other Christmas goodies soon to stock the shelves.  What does this mean for sea transport?  It means you may need to work with a good logistics company if you need to ship something abroad!

Now is arguably the start of a bit of chaos on the high seas!  No, it isn’t a pirate adventure, but container and cargo shipping can put a crimp in your attempt to move overseas, send business equipment abroad or import a car from another country.  Politely called “congestion issues,” sometimes costs increase, unloading and roll-on/roll-off services go up and the amount of capacity available and the level of freight rates makes shipping anything in the next few months a bit volatile.

Not to worry, though.  Working with a logistics company means that you can avoid the hassle of trying to figure out the best budget friendly way to ship your goods on the same carrier.  Working with K International means your shipment will get its own case manager from start to finish, ensuring you don’t have to deal with tracking the shipment from port to port.  You also avoid the need to worry about whether your paperwork is in order, the cause of much delay in shipping.

Whether you need to move a fleet of vintage cars abroad or pack up your entire household for an overseas business move, working with a logistics company is critical during this extra-busy time of year.

What You Need to Know About Banks and Cargo

There is a lot of paperwork to deal with when it comes to shipping goods abroad.  Everything from the bill of lading to the proper labeling and documentation at each port of call needs to be carefully done.  Working with a logistics expert is important when it comes to shipping items with a letter of credit.  Why?  Here are a few things to consider when it comes to banks and cargo.

One example is the letter of credit.  There is often a lot of dispute by the bank when it comes to receiving goods that are labeled a certain way or if there is a discrepancy in the shipped on board clause or even the date or stamp or signature can provoke delays.  But despite all this fuss over the paperwork, the bank isn’t actually going to verify that the items listed on board are actually on board.  They are only expected to verify the paperwork.

What does it mean?  It means the bank is not liable for any shipping inaccuracy that may occur, including weight, quantity and even the quality or condition of the packed items.  The bank only verifies that the container has been cleared by customs and physically loaded on the vessel.  They merely check the description against the bill of lading.

What does this mean for you?  It means two things.  First, you need to work with a logistics firm that has a lot of experience with letters of credit so that you don’t run into any banking snafus that could have been easily avoided.  Your logistics company should be very detail oriented and have a lot of experience in making sure the paperwork is exactly right.  But you also need the personal touch.  Since you can’t rely on the bank to ensure that what is on the boat is really what is loaded and making it from port to port, you can rely on K International’s experience to ensure you get a single point person assigned to your shipment from start to finish.

    What are Dangerous Goods?

Also known as hazardous goods, it is important to understand what constitutes dangerous goods if you are planning on shipping items overseas so that you don’t create any unnecessary hazards to yourself or the shipping crew.  Not understanding what is possible can mean serious delays.

In general, anything that is considered explosive, flammable, poisonous or corrosive in some way is considered dangerous goods and must be labeled.  In some instances, the cargo may be considered dangerous because it is also possibly polluting to the marine environment.  Explosives and gasses or flammable liquids naturally make the list.  Items subject to spontaneous combustion or oxidizing substances, radioactive materials, toxic and infectious substances also make the list.  Other miscellaneous items may be on the dangerous goods list without being intuitively obvious that they pose a threat.

Batteries, computer parts, cigarette lighters, drilling and mining equipment and other machinery parts and even frozen foods are some of the items considered for one reason or another to be potentially hazardous.  Sometimes the hazard is not the item itself, but the way in which the item is packed that could potentially set off an explosion.

Taking safety seriously is everyone’s job.  When mistakes happen, they can have deadly consequences.  Serious accidents happen all the time, the most recent case happening in China where hundreds were killed and more missing in a massive explosion at a logistics warehouse storing dangerous goods.  Even the rescue efforts were hampered when everyone realized they had no idea the full extent of the dangerous goods in the warehouse.

It is important to take seriously what you might consider simple and inconvenient requirements when shipping your goods – such as making sure the gasoline is drained from your vehicle and the battery disconnected.  Understanding how to properly label and declare any dangerous goods ensures they will be handled with the utmost care.  Miscommunication or misdeclaration can result in serious problems and delays.

Big Data Could Help Your Next Shipping Move

Big Data is all anyone can talk about in the tech world, and indeed it’s creating a quiet kind of revolution in the way we do just about everything.  The way it works is through microtechnology.  Imagine the typical iPhone with a health app that measures your steps, for example.  Now, what if that data could be used to make better decisions about your life and your treatment?  That’s the idea behind Big Data.  Lots of data is being collected in various ways – through apps, in real-time with machines, etc.  But as yet, no one is really doing anything substantive with the information.  Well, what if Big Data could change the way you ship?  That move is coming next.

Big Data is definitely having an impact on ocean cargo shipping.  Real-time data allows ship owners to manage fleets in a variety of ways through the sensors built into newer ships.  Data captured could be anything from location and current weather, ocean current, performance of equipment on board or even cargo status.  This data is then analyzed to determine any insights that fleet owners can glean on everything from how much time ships spend “down” or idle to whether the majority are running at full cargo carrying capacity.  This will help business owners make better decisions in the long run.

What does it mean for consumers, like those of us who want to ship overseas?  Primarily it means better services!  Imagine the possibilities if a ship could receive real-time alerts or warnings about functionality, weather, ocean current that could impact speed to destination?  Even better, predictive maintenance means more efficient scheduling, a win-win situation for both customer and owner.  Stay tuned to see how Big Data improves shipping cargo abroad.  The future looks promising.

Congress Passes on Highway Transportation Issues

Late last month, Congress granted a three-month extension to the Highway Trust Fund just one day before funding was set to expire.  This new extension is just on the heels of a previous five month extension.  Unfortunately, this is only prolonging the pain the transportation system is experiencing right now, causing others who need to move goods around to look for other logistical solutions.

Coming up with a multi-year plan to solve the transportation infrastructure issue nationally has been a concern for some time.  Everyone agrees there is a problem, but no one can figure out how to fund the solutions.  Since there has never been a real strategy for funding transportation costs in the past several years – cobbled together programs and small taxes that expire in a couple of years make up the bulk of the funding – the real work of coming up with a long term solution is still to be done.

There is a lot of work to be done.  Bridges in disrepair, highways in need of fixing and a serious shortage of truck drivers mean pain to come for many months.  This leaves those of us who work with transportation logistics scrambling to find alternatives to keep our business procedures going.

Whether the government comes up with a solution to the program quickly or not, those who have to move goods to other locations or rely on trucking for much of their movement might want to think about working with a logistics company to find solutions to meet their needs.  Working with an experienced team that understands your needs ensures that even with a trucker shortage, there may be other ways to get the job done.  Rely on our expertise to get your business through these difficult times.

Issues to Consider When Moving a Household Abroad

The typical household move abroad is an exciting time.  Yet the need to deal with the paperwork, movers and other issues that arise from an international move are still a headache.  Here are a few pointers and tips regarding moving a household abroad, based on the typical cases from the past few years.  See how it might relate to your move abroad.

The typical move involves some household goods and personal items as well as an automobile or perhaps even a motorcycle.  The move is usually motivated by a change in job location and the employer is generally paying for the moving expenses (most, if not all).  The customer will generally want to drop off goods – or have them picked up – from their current location and then go “hands-off” during the move until they arrive at their destination, where they will expect the goods to be delivered.

Challenge 1:  Expert packing.  This kind of move requires an expert in loading vehicles into an ocean container.  Particularly since gasoline must be drained and batteries disconnected, you really must go with someone who knows what they are doing, or you could do your vehicles serious damage.  If your move originates in a city that isn’t a port location, this can complicate your move – but it isn’t impossible.

Challenge 2:  Paperwork hassles. There are bills of lading, possible letters of credit and other documentation that must be immaculately handled.  If things aren’t done properly, you can incur fines and charges at each port for which the paperwork isn’t correct.  Not to mention the stress of delays because things aren’t as they should be!

Challenge 2:  Expert unpacking.  Once the family arrives at their destination, often in a developing part of the world, they will need professionals to unload their carefully packed items safely.  This is much easier to coordinate when you use a reputable logistics service that can coordinate moves in multiple countries (especially landlocked destinations!)

Even for a “typical” move abroad, going with a reliable shipping company and logistics expert is critical for making sure the right thing happens every time.  From the moment the goods leave your current home, to the warehouse packing and paperwork, to the unpacking and delivery, you want to go with people who can manage every step of the way.

Preparing Your Car for Roll-on/Roll-off Services

From a logistics standpoint, roll-on/roll off car shipping is a great budget way to ship your automobile overseas.  Whether you want to export a car to a buyer abroad, import a car for your personal use, or bring the family vehicle along on a move abroad, there are lots of great reasons to ship your car abroad – and budget friendly, too!  Here are a few ways to prepare for the transition.

Unpack your car completely.  You are not allowed to have items inside the car when you are shipping by roll-on/roll-off services.  Clients usually want to pack the car with items, because you are paying for the shipping space; but ports are very strict when it comes to this rule, and you don’t want to incur any fines nor cause any damage to your car during the shipping process.

Drain the gas in the car.  Again, another tempting strategy clients want to pursue is to fill up the tank, knowing gas in other countries is much more expensive.  But this isn’t a good idea and can actually make your vehicle unsafe to transport!  Have as little gas in the car as possible.

A side note:  shipping personnel will handle your car, driving it on and off the ship.  It might be a wise idea to prevent dirt and upholstery stains by putting down disposable paper mats and plastic covers on your seats – just like you were going to the mechanic!

Make sure you check with a reliable logistics company to ensure you can get your car where you want it to go.  Not all car carrier vessel services go to all places, and the more remote locations might require additional logistics to ensure you get your vehicle where you want it to go.  Similarly, not all ocean ports can handle roll-on/roll-off cargo so check with us first.

Political Changes Affect the Transportation Industry

When we try to get a sense of the transportation industry, we begin by looking at shipping conditions, prices for freight, handling costs, paperwork and a number of things that are important to logistics.  What we don’t always think of are the political changes that might impact our ability to move our goods like we want to.  Here are a few political considerations in the United States that might impact transportation issues just as strongly as a worker’s strike!

The main issue is that the most recent highway program extension will end in July.  But more needs to be done in order to alter a crumbling infrastructure.  While Congress did move to extend the program by a good five months, that creates more problems than it solves, as it likely means Congress won’t take up the issue again until 2017.  In the meantime, our infrastructure continues to need repairs at a rate that eclipses the amount spent on repairs.  Further, no long term planning can happen if there is no, well, long term plan.  So the cost of short term projects increases (by some estimates as much as 30%), while long term fixes are stalled.

In some cases, Congress is focusing specifically on freight by trying to create a multimodal freight planning and policy provision.  But the vote was split right down in the middle and included a flat-out rejection of proposed rail safety measures.  The inability to figure out what to do has been described by the United States Transportation Secretary as a series of “tsunamis coming around the corner.”  Instead of the couple of hundred millions of dollars spent on infrastructure, some estimates say the United States needs as much as $1 trillion in investment.

So what does this all mean for those of us with important shipping to do?  Whether you are working on a one time move to another location in the country or you have regular importing and exporting to do, chances are you are going to run into the same infrastructure problems that everyone else is soon to experience.  Working with an expert in logistics can help you determine what your alternatives are when it comes to moving your important freight, heavy equipment, vintage cars or other important items.
