International Shipping Companies - In Depth: Shipper's Export Declaration (Part 4)

There are many ways to ship a Lexus overseas (about as many for shipping an Audi internationally), but one thing all of these shipments have in common is that your vehicle won't ever leave the United States without obtaining an AES ITN (that's Automated Export System Internal Transaction Number, for the laypeople out there). If you definitely want to ship a Mercedes to Saudi Arabia, you need to file a Shipper's Export Declaration to get that AES ITN. K International Transport is able to file this on your behalf, taking the burden of export customs compliance of your shoulders.

In this final segment, I will cover the "Commodity Information" section of the Shipper's Export Declaration. There are sections I have not covered, but they are generally optional or not applicable to most shipments our customers send.

  • Commodity Information - This section is going to be comprised of various information about what it is your are shipping.
    • Schedule B number
      • Schedule B numbers are the classification system used by the United States government to categorize exports for census statistics. These numbers are based upon the broader Harmonized System that is an internationally standard system that also lends itself to United States Harmonized Tariff Schedule used by the U.S. for determining import duties. Identical goods should have identical Schedule B and Harmonized Schedule numbers only up to 6 digits (Schedule B numbers have 10 digits)
      • If you are unsure of what number to use, K International is happy to advise the correct one
    • Qty (only for some Schedule B numbers)
      • For every schedule B number that requires a quantity, the quantity used is generally the one used by the industry dealing in that commodity. Common quantity types include net kilograms (56 kgs), number of units (2 Airplanes), and liters (6 liters of Vanilla Flavoring).
    • Gross Weight
    • Commercial Value
    • Origin (F - Foreign, D - Domestic)
      • This can be tricky to determine at times, especially when a product is assembled in one country, but from parts manufactured in many others.
    • License code
      • For some types of commodities the Bureau of Industry and Security require specific licenses to be obtained prior to export. To this end, depending on the type of goods, an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) and Export License Number may be required as well.
    • Used Vehicle? Y/N
      • If the answer to this is yes, then one must also enter the VIN # (or product ID where applicable), Title Number and State that issued Title
This concludes the run-down of commonly required information for the Shipper's Export Declaration. However, in certain cases more extensive information is required, which is why K International Transport is available to file the Shipper's Export Declaration on your behalf, and prevent any costly mistakes in compliance.

International Shipping Companies - In Depth: Shipper's Export Declaration (Part 3)

Shipping a car overseas can seem overwhelming at first, but can be made much easier by relying on an experienced international shipping company like K International Transport for guidance. One step of the process many individuals looking to ship a car internationally are unfamiliar with is the Shipper's Export Declaration. In this series I will go through and explain the the Shipper's Export Declaration, so the Automated Export System (AES) is no longer a scary term.

This part of this series covers the "Freight Forwarder" and "Intermediate Consignee Information" sections of the shipper's export declaration that must be filed if you want to obtain an AES Internal Transaction Number (ITN), which is required if you want to transport a car overseas.

  • Freight Forwarder Information - A Freight Forwarder is an entity that organizes shipments. Akin to a travel agent for international cargo. K International Transport is a licensed freight forwarder.
    • Name of Company
    • EIN Number
      • Employer Identification Number
    • Contact Name
    • Contact Phone
    • Address
  • Intermediate Consignee Information -Generally the information of the Consignee's agent at Port of Discharge. There are times when there is no intermediate consignee. This agent sometimes will claim, customs clear, and deliver the cargo to the ultimate consignee.
    • Name of Company
    • Contact Name
    • Contact Phone
    • Address

While at first glance it may not appear to be all the helpful, but knowing what information your freight forwarder needs in order to file the Shipper's Export Declaration will expedite the process of shipping cars internationally. K International Transport has over 20 years of experience in filing Shipper's Export Declarations, and while we like our customers to have an understanding of the shipping process (that's why I am writing this!) we are happy to keep up to date on changing export regulations so you don't have to!

International Shipping Companies - In Depth: Shipper's Export Declaration (Part 2)

United States Export regulations can be on of the trickier parts of shipping your car overseas. For nearly all exports, the United States government requires a Shipper's Export Declaration to be filed prior to export. K International Transport can file the SED on your behalf, making international car shipping much smoother for you. In this series I will go through and explain the common pieces of information required to fill out a Shipper's Export Declaration, so the Automated Export System (AES) is less of a mystery. Please note that even if you intend to ship LCL internationally, it is likely still required to file an SED.

In this part of this series, I will cover the "USPPI Information" and "Ultimate Consignee Information" sections of the shipper's export declaration that must be filed if you want to obtain an AES Internal Transaction Number (ITN), which is required if you want to ship your car internationally.

USPPI Information

  • United States Principal Party in Interest is generally the seller, owner or manufacturer. If a foreign entity is in the U.S. when they buy the goods for export, they could also be the USPPI
  • Name of Company
    • Company or individual's name
  • EIN Number - Employer Identification Number
    • When exporting, you must apply for an EIN if you are an individual. The process is very short, and K International can guide you through it.
    • If you are a non-U.S. passport holder, you may simply use that non-U.S. passport number instead of obtaining an EIN
  • Contact Name
  • Contact Phone
  • Cargo origin
    • Simply the physical location the items being declared began their shipment. If you are exporting a car and you just bought it from a dealership, then that would be the place of origin. If you are shipping your possessions from your residence, then it would be your residence.
Ultimate Consignee Information
  • The Ultimate Consignee is generally the party that will end up with the goods in the destination, such as the buyer, or you are moving, then this would simply be your name again.
  • Name of Company
    • Company or individual's name
  • Contact Name
  • Contact Phone
  • Address
    • This address must be an address in the country of destination

International Shipping Companies - In Depth: Shipper's export Declaration (Part 1)

When you ship your car overseas, one of the first areas of concern is how to comply with United States Export regulations. For any export valued at over $2,500.00 per schedule B number (the number assigned to exports based on what they are), the U.S. government requires that you file a Shipper's Export Declaration. As a licensed Freight Forwarder, K International Transport can file the SED on your behalf, making international car shipping that much easier for you. K International Transport is an international shipping company that is ready to listen to your concerns, and guide you through shipping your car overseas.

In this part of this series, I will cover the "General Shipment Information" section of the shipper's export declaration that must be filed if you want to ship your car internationally.

  • General Shipment info
    • Departure Date
      • Must be filed ~48 hours before departure date to avoid any difficulties
    • Booking Number
      • Referred to as Transportation Reference Number
    • Origin State
      • Where the cargo begins its trip
    • Country of Destination
    • Export Port
    • Mode of Transportation
      • For International Automobile Shipping, options generally are: VESSEL; VESSEL, CONTAINERIZED; AIR
    • Carrier SCAC
      • Standard Carrier Alpha Code, a unique four-digit code used to identify transportation companies
    • Vessel name
    • Routed Transaction?  (Y/N)
      • A routed transaction is when the Foreign Principal Party in Interest is the one who authorized the Forwarder (e.g. K International Transport) to file the SED, and not the United States Principal Party in Interest
    • Are USPPI (shipper) and Consignee Related?  (Y/N)
      • For example if someone is relocating overseas and shipping their furniture and/or car to themselves, the answer to this would be YES.
    • Hazardous?  (Y/N)
If you are interested in discussing international LCL shipping costs, please do not hesitate to contact us either, as a Shipper's Export Declaration is also required. For an international car shipping cost, please visit our rate request page, send an email to inquiries@kinternational.com, or call us at (212) 267-6400.
